Understanding Genealogy The Easy Way
Ever wondered where baldness in the family came from or if breast cancer will affect the person? There are many things the person can learn by understanding the genealogy. All it takes is a little research to make the individual aware of the mistakes in the past to be able to prepare for the future.
The person may get some information from the parents, the uncles and aunts. Those in 2nd or third degree might be more difficult so it is best to call first to set up an interview to get other data.
Absorbing all the information will not be easy so it is best to write everything down in the notepad. The person can also bring a tape recorder or a video cam if is ok with the relative. This will also make it easy for the individual to recall something mentioned before.
A deceased relative is not a dead end. The person can be resourceful by getting in touch with those that survived. The individual can visit the home and look at some old yearbooks to get in touch with former classmates from school.
The neighbors and friends who knew the relative can give an idea to the kind of person the relative was.
If the information provided is not enough, this is the time the person can go online. There are many websites around from obituaries, memberships in religious groups and government agency organizations.
The relative could have discovered a medical breakthrough or was an artist. This means the works are published in a magazine or a newspaper and the person can check through archives to find out.
Some of the accounts given may not be consistent with the version of other people. This may mean interviewing the person again. If the story of 2 people check out compared to the third, perhaps the other one can be eliminated. This will really depend on the credibility of the source on how close this individual was with the deceased.
The person can make a chart after putting everything together. The most important are the names of these individuals, the date of birth and death. Arrows can then lead to the offspring who also had families.
This can also be placed in a scrapbook so that the work can be preserved and seen by those in the next generation. Those who are proud can also published this on the web for the entire world to see.
Someone once said that people should never forget the lessons of the past or be condemned to repeat it. Though this is one way of looking at history, genealogy gives people something else.
It tells people where the family came from. This may have started a century ago which is a very long time which could make the person understand the hardships endured especially if these people migrated from another country.
This could describe where the person got the height, the build and the looks. There are those who came from a family of doctors or musicians. This tradition is passed on from one generation to the next since it is regarded as a legacy that must live on.
Those who don’t understand that can have a better outlook at life by knowing how important it is to keep some old values alive.
