Sony PlayStation 3

With over 1 million searches on Yahoo in November, it is plain to see that the PS3 is a very popular piece of equipment.  It is a versatile and impressive piece of home entertainment equipment.

The Playstation 3 (PS3) is available in two versions - 20 GB and 60 GB hard drive versions which both feature a new Cell processor, a built-in Blu-ray player, and HDMI video output. The two versions of the PS3 are worth their considerable price tags, however, the system will be in short supply in the near future and you probably won't be able to get your hands on one for a while. The good news is by the time you do get one, Sony will have most likely made improvements and added new features.

The PS3's design, shape and glossy finish has made this one sexy machine.  The PS3 weighs about 11 pounds, measures 12.8 inches wide x 3.8 high x 10.8 long and can stand vertically or lie horizontally.  Unlike most game units, the PS3 uses a normal power cord which plugs directly into the back of the unit (no heavy power supply units to lug around).

The Playstation 3 has all kinds of ports including USB, Ethernet, HDMI output, optical digital audio output (SPDIF) and the PlayStation A/V output for analog audio and video (the unit ships with a composite A/V cable).

The PS3 comes with a single controller which looks very much like the PlayStation2 Dual Shock gamepad, however, it is wireless so you can connect up to 7 controllers using the system's Bluetooth and it includes a six direction motion detector. The controller has a built-in battery which is recharged by simply connecting the controller to the PS3 console using the included USB cable.

Similar to the PSP the PS3 uses bar type navigation, horizontally through top-level categories such as users, system settings and media options.  Once the top-level category has been selected, a vertical list of options will appear for you to navigate down to the option you want.

As a Digital Media Hub the PlayStation3 can do some amazing things.

Your PS3 can read digital photos from a variety of USB-attached devices (including memory cards on the 60GB model).

The PS3 supports most of the major music-file types, you can even play CDs and rip songs directly to the hard drive!

As for videos, the PS3 can play Blu-ray discs as well as DVD movies. This PlayStation also supports MPEG1, MPEG2, and MPEG4/h.264 video files.

And lets not forget Web TV.  Your PlayStation3 also has a built-in web browser and when you connect a USB keyboard browsing to a URL is much faster than before where you had to use the system's virtual keyboard. A USB mouse makes web browsing even easier.

The PlayStation 3's 3.2GHz Cell processor was built from the ground up just for the PS3 which will allow it to run a new class of gameplay and will allow developers to create even more spectacular effects and eventually provide even greater realism to games.

Thanks to its backward compatability and its controller design and compatability, you can play most PS1 and PS2 games while you're waiting for the new PS3 games to evolve.
